If your business still uses Google Workspace, a local mail server or on-premise Exchange, 2026 is the year when migrating truly makes sense. Not because of technology trends, but for three concrete reasons: a non-repayable grant covering half the cost, upcoming regulatory obligations and end-of-support for widely used platforms.
1. The MIMIT Voucher covers 50%
The MIMIT Cloud & Cybersecurity Voucher 2026 offers SMEs and professionals a 50% non-repayable grant on cloud, cybersecurity and SaaS expenditure, up to a maximum of €20,000. Migration to Microsoft 365 is fully eligible: licences, configuration, data migration and training.
This means a migration that would normally cost €10,000 costs €5,000. An opportunity that doesn't come around every year.
2. NIS2 requires adequate infrastructure
The NIS2 Directive requires companies in essential and important sectors to adopt security measures proportionate to risk. Managing email on a local server without MFA, centralised logging and transport encryption becomes a compliance issue.
Microsoft 365 with Exchange Online offers native MFA, integrated audit logs, TLS encryption, DLP and configurable retention policies. It doesn't solve everything, but it covers a significant portion of NIS2 technical requirements for email management.
3. Exchange 2016 and 2019 end of support
Microsoft has announced the end of extended support for Exchange Server 2016 on 14 October 2025. Exchange 2019 follows on 14 October 2025 with the end of mainstream support. After these dates, no more security updates. Staying on these platforms exposes you to unpatched vulnerabilities.
The same applies to those using Google Workspace without the internal expertise to manage advanced security: migrating to a managed, supported environment reduces operational risk.
What a typical migration includes
- Assessment of the source environment (mailboxes, sizes, integrations)
- Microsoft 365 tenant configuration and DNS/MX record setup
- Migration of email, calendars, contacts and files (Drive or file server)
- Security configuration: MFA, conditional access, anti-phishing
- User training and post-migration support
